IN THE COUNCIL OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CRIMEAN TATAR PEOPLE
The Council of the Representatives of the Crimean Tatar people attached to the
President of Ukraine, which was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine #518/99 from 18 May 1999.
All 33 members of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people were included in the Council. The Chair of the Mejlis
of the Crimean Tatar people, member of the Parliament of Ukraine Mustafa Dzhemilev was appointed as the Head
of the Council.
The preamble of the Decree of the President of Ukraine notes the necessity of
establishment of the Council of the Representatives of the Crimean Tatar people attached to the President of
Ukraine — “in order to solve the political-legal, socioeconomic, cultural and other issues, connected with
adaptation and integration of formerly deported Crimean Tatar people into Ukrainian community, the uncertainty
of a legal status of Mejlis, elected by Kurultay of Crimean Tatar people”.
The status of the Council of the Representatives of the Crimean Tatar people was
approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine #573/2000 from 7 April 2000 (attached)
On 11 May 2000 the first meeting of the Council of the Representatives of the
Crimean Tatar people was held. As a result, the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma gave the appropriate instructions
on realization of recommendations, which were adopted by the Council (attached)
One plans to hold next meeting of the Council of the Representatives of the Crimean
Tatar people with participation of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma in Crimea in August 2000.
